THE SCHUMANN SISTERS PERFORM ENOCH ARDEN, A GRIPPING, ELABORATE TALE OF TRAGIC LOSS AND NOBLE SELF DENIAL, WITH WORDS BY TENNYSON AND MUSIC BY RICHARD STRAUSS

ARTISTS

Elizabeth Schumann, Piano, Sonya Schumann, Narrator

This concert is perfect for newcomers to classical music, people that want to get into classical music but are concerned they won’t know how to appreciate the performance. The story of Enoch is gripping, and the music serves to make it even more engaging.

Enoch Arden is an epic melodrama, an elaborate tale of tragic loss and noble self denial. Originally published as a poem in 1864 by Alfred Lord Tennyson, the words were set to music in 1897 by Richard Strauss. The resulting dialogue between narrator and pianist weaves a poignant story of friendship, love, separation, and sacrifice.
